Devenir-Image: une ode à Marcel Broodthaers

Une ode à Marcel Broodthaers dans un magnifique concept visuel de Nico Dockx & Helena Sidiropoulos, avec présentation à Bozar !

‘Projet pour un livre. Projet pour un film’ (RA, Antwerpen) by Nico Dockx and Helena Sidiropoulos came into existence ‘by accident’. Dockx was working in the Bozar archives when he found a model of a catalogue of the Marcel Broodthaers exhibition of 2001, which was never finished. Corine Diserens was the exhibition’s curator and she did not get the rights to use images of Broodthaer’s works, so no catalogue was made.

Dockx and Sidiropoulos used this as the basis of the book. The most striking feature of the book are the many black images.

« A book should show, spread knowledge and inform. Here the images are hidden: they are censured. There are rightful claimants and they do not give permission to show images or report about the works of Marcel Broodthaers. This entire project contains multiple paradoxes. As a censured work it eventually makes its way to the public. More importantly: we may not see the works but we do know what should have been there based on the comments. We know the oeuvre of Marcel Broodthaers (either by seeing them in real life or in other books) so these images live in this book, despite them being hidden by those who thought to make money off this book. This artist’s book is therefore also a denunciation of money and property. »
