Nico Dockx & Yona Friedman, Iconostase

About Yona Friedman

Born in Budapest (Hungary), lives in Paris (France).

« If a theory is well constructed and spread abroad, it has the advantage of no longer being the property of specialists, but of stemming from the public domain. The present-day monopoly of the architect has to do with the fact that there is no real theory, but merely a set of pseudo-theoriesä in other words, observations which only reflect the preferences of their authors »

As a Hungarian-Jewish architect, Yona Friedman was involved in the reconstruction of Israel in forties. His ideas go completely against Le Corbusier and modernism.  According to Friedman, each individual should design his or her own house; the architect should only be coming up with large urban structures. In 1958, Yona Friedman published his first manifest Mobile Architecture. It described a new form of mobility, not of buildings but of inhabitants who receive new liberties. This enduring engagement brought him to a broader research into participation, that goes on to this day.
